Artist Statement
‘Map art calls into question the map’s service to the state, the nature of the map’s propositions, and its use of indexing systems to define meaning. Map art doubts the certainties of the map and this creates a space for rethinking the map, for unmaking it; this endows it with the potential to free maps at last from the tyranny of the state.’
Denis Wood, Writer and Map Theorist
I create my pieces by using cutting as a repetitive process and maps as a canvas, the action of the constant cutting replicates the frequent reprinting of the map.
I use maps to map out important places in my life, creating my own timeline,
following guidelines and rules that I set myself when starting to work with the found object, the map already gives me direction on what to do, so I use the boundaries it presents me with to create the work.
